Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams made a clean sweep of in-state rival Southwest Missouri State today at the MU Natatorium, as the Tiger men claimed a 156.5-86.5 win, with the Tiger women earning a 170-73 victory.
Neither Tiger team trailed on the day, as each side won the opening 400 yard medley relay events and went on to cruise from there. In all, the Tiger women won 11 of 13 events on the day, while the men finished first in nine events.
The diving squads on both sides for Mizzou were impressive on the day, as the men finished 1-2-3-4 in the 1-meter event and 1-2-3 in the 3-meter event. Junior Evan Watters placed first at 1-meter with a score of 326.55, while freshman teammate Jeff Wolfert won the 3-meter event with a score of 284.70.
On the women's side, MU divers claimed the top two spots in the 1-meter competition and swept the top four spots at 3-meters. Freshman Rachel Witt won the lower height with a score of 241.65, while junior Nicole Frazier was the top diver at 3-meters, with a winning score of 254.77.
In the pool, sophomore Shannon Hogan was a standout for the Tiger women, as she won two individual events, and swam a leg on MU's winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. Hogan claimed first place in both the 50-yard (24.45) and 100-yard (53.25) freestyle events, and was the second leg on the 400 freestyle relay team that won in a time of 3:33.04, along with teammate Lindsay Palbykin, Katie Gates and Sarah Menefee.
Seniors Becca Dawson and Mariona Costa each led 1-2-3 Mizzou sweeps in the 200 butterfly and 200 breastroke, respectively. Dawson won the fly in a time of 2:05.32, while Costa won the breaststroke in 2:20.78.
Palbykin added a win in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.60, and was joined in the winners circle by teammates Amanda Morford in the 200 individual medley (2:10.20) and Sarah Menefee in the 200 backstroke (2:07.79).
Senior Matt North had another strong day in the pool for the Tiger men, as he won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:03.38, and also was the second leg on the 400-yard medley relay team that won the first event of the day in a time of 3:24.78. Joining North on that winning relay team were teammates Chris Lukas, Chris McCrary and Dan Buhr.
Lukas and McCrary also claimed individual wins on the day, with Lukas winning the 200 backstroke (1:50.82), while McCrary claimed a win in the 50 freestyle (21.12).
Other men's winners on the day included Columbia native PeterWillett in the 1,000 freestyle (9:34.34), and freshmen Bennett Clark in the 100 freestyle (47.04) and Brandon Lee in the 500 freestyle (4:44.38).
The win today moved the Tiger men's season dual record to 4-1, while the Tiger women improved to 4-2 on the season.
Up next for both squads is a home dual against Drury University, set for Friday, January 21st at 6 p.m. at the MU Natatorium. The women will also swim next Saturday at home, as they have a dual set for 1 p.m. against Iowa State on January 22nd.
