MIZZOU TRIES TO KEEP CYCLONE STREAK SATURDAY IN AMES
The University of Missouri women's basketball team (7-7, 1-2 Big 12) will try to break one streak by continuing another Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa, as the Tigers face 24th-ranked Iowa State in a 1 p.m. game that will be televised by FSN. The Tigers come into the game on a two-game losing streak and on the heels of their worst loss in the nine-year history of the Big 12 Conference, an 87-44 setback at No. 23 Kansas State.
Although the Cyclones come into the game ranked, Mizzou has had recent success against Iowa State, winning the last four games in the series.
SCOUTING THE CYCLONES
This week, Iowa State climbed back to a familiar spot that it had been away from for two years: the national polls. ISU enters Saturday's game ranked 24th by both the media and coaches. The Cyclones' lone loss came on Dec. 1 at Iowa, which was the nation's last unbeaten team. With Iowa State reeling off 10 straight wins, the Cyclones are one of just five teams left in the country with just one loss.
Guard Anne O'Neil is ISU's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 17.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Fellow senior Katie Robinnette is second in both categories (14.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg), and is also the team's top shot-blocker (25). Iowa State is the Big 12's top-scoring (82.6 ppg), top-shooting (47.4 percent) and most prolific 3-point shooting (9.21 3FGpg) team. In addition, Iowa State is the second-highest-scoring team in the nation, behind only Vanderbilt (85.1 ppg).
THE IOWA STATE SERIES
The Tigers have dominated the all-time series by a 43-15 margin, yet Iowa State has owned the last eight years overall, going 13-5 vs. Missouri in that span. Iowa State's surge in the late 1990's and early part of this decade, and Mizzou's recent success in the last two years, have created an interesting note: Among Big 12 schools, Missouri and Colorado hold the longest current winning streak against Iowa State with four straight wins.
Iowa State's acsent this week into the national rankings throws a wrench in MU's historical succes, though: Missouri is 0-9 against the Cyclones when they are ranked.
LAST TIME OUT: #23 KANSAS STATE 87, MIZZOU 44
Kendra Wecker posted game highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Laurie Koehn hit five 3-pointers to lead No. 23 Kansas State to a 87-44 win over Missouri in Big 12 Conference action Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum. The 43-point margin is Missouri's largest in nine years of Big 12 play, topping an 84-47 loss at Nebraska in 1997.
