Columbia, Mo.--The Mizzou Tigers proved that persistence does pay off in their 1-0 victory over Iowa today. Out shooting the Hawkeyes 29-to-3, the Tigers finally sank the game-winner taking shot #29 with just three minutes of play remaining.
Taking the field against Iowa utilizing the same formation that brought the team success in the final period against Wisconsin on Friday, the Tigers took control of the game from the kick off. Mizzou's fluid ball handling enabled the Tigers to skillfully dominate the Hawkeyes in order to create play making opportunities.
Iowa goalkeeper Britta Vogele had her hands full fending off 15 shots, including six shots on goal during the first half. Meanwhile, Mizzou kept the Hawkeye offense subdued allowing just one shot in the period.
Returning to the second half, the Tigers again throttled the Iowa goal with gut wrenching shots, but were unable to sneak behind the Hawkeye goal line. Mizzou kept to its standard however and continued its onslaught until finally reaping the rewards of diligence when Jennifer Nobis scored the game-winning goal late in the second half.
Duplicating the Tigers' first goal of the 2004 season, senior Karen Bauer lofted a cornerkick high over the Iowa box where Nobis nailed a shot past the Hawkeye keeper. The feat marks the fourth consecutive game Nobis has scored a goal for Mizzou and brings Bauer's season assist tally to two.
Freshman goalkeeper Laura Buehrig brings her season record to 2-2 making two saves in the game.
Missouri resumes home season play next weekend when Mizzou hosts Stanford and Florida. The Tigers welcome the Cardinals on Fri., Sept. 10 at 7:00 p.m., and face the Gators on Sun., Sept. 12 at 12:00 p.m.
