SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Missouri junior Conrad Woolsey learned Tuesday that he will be one of the 24 competing in the men's shot put at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, joining Tiger post-collegian Christian Cantwell in the event. Woolsey, a native of Excelsior Springs, Mo., will show in his first appearance at an Olympic Trial and his first in a U.S. Championship. Woolsey was the only Tiger in 2004 to earn All-America honors in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Woolsey learned the fact at an unlikely place, Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport. In a lay-over between Kansas City and Sacramento, Woolsey was informed by Missouri Track & Field Head Coach Dr. Rick McGuire about the news.
"I had a good feeling I was going to get into the meet," said Woolsey. "A lot of times they will take a couple more of the posted field because people are so close. That's why I got on the plane."
Woolsey finished eighth at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., and followed-up with a seventh place national finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas. Woolsey transferred from Northwest Missouri State University where won an NCAA Division II Championship in the men's shot put in 2001.
Woolsey and Christian Cantwell will throw in the preliminary round of the men's shot put on Friday, the 9th, at 8:10 p.m., central. The top twelve will advance to the finals, held Saturday, the 10th, at 6:30 p.m., central, and will be live on NBC.
