
Bales, Scherder, Woolsey Qualify For NCAA Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Missouri track and field team battled 90-degree temperatures at the first day of the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships on Friday. After day one the Missouri women stand in 9th place with eight points, and the men are in 15th place with 4. Amanda Bales, Holly Scherder, and Conrad Woolsey automatically qualified themselves for the NCAA Championships with top five finishes.
Senior Holly Scherder became the first Tiger to qualify automatically for the NCAA Championships. Scherder will advance after finishing fifth in the women's hammer throw, hitting a mark of 194 feet, 6 inches (59.25m), nine-feet better than sixth place. Fellow Senior Ann Snider took 15th place, throwing for 170 feet, 8 inches (52.03m).
Sophomore Amanda Bales ran in her second ever 5000-meter on the track and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing fifth. Her time of 16:26.71 is a personal-best by 20 seconds. Jill Petersen finished 12th in the race, timing in at 17:01.28. Senior Katherine Bonugli clocked in at 17:30.69, finishing 18th.
In the men's shot put, junior Conrad Woolsey earned a fifth place finish, throwing for 60 feet, 9? inches (18.53m). Junior Adam Burla hit a two-foot personal best with a throw of 56-1? (17.11m) placing 11th. Freshmen Bill Hobson took 17th throwing for 55-3? (16.86m).
Sophomore Ashley Patten finished 15th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.94. Her season-best time of 2:05.43 from the Stanford Invitational will likely gain her an at-large bid at the NCAA Championships. The qualifiers for the national championships will be announced early next week.
Senior Lyndsay Tait took 14th in the women's pole vault, leaping over the 11-10 (3.61m) bar.
Freshman Melanie Uher took 19th in the women's discus with a throw of 153-4 (46.74m). Sophomore Jamie Wynn finished 21st, throwing 149-6 (45.57m). Junior Lindsay Markworth threw for 122-6.
Sophomore Tim Ross finished 12th in the 5000-meter run, running in a time of 14:47.63.
