COLUMBIA, Mo.-- - With its 8-2 win over Western Illinois on Wednesday at Taylor Stadium, the Mizzou baseball team moved to 10-2 on the year, its best start since the 1993 team opened 11-2. The Tigers finished their first homestand of the season 4-1 after sweeping the two games from the Leathernecks.
Western Illinois took the early lead, putting two runs on the board in the top of the third inning. Missouri cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom of the third. Sophomore SS Zane Taylor, who reached base on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch, scored on a single by sophomore CF Tyler Williams.
Missouri then took the lead with a three-run sixth inning. With one out, senior 1B Cody Ehlers walked and junior C Cosme Caballero singled. With that hit, Caballero has now had a hit in each of the last seven games. A double to left field by senior DH Brad Flanders drove in Ehlers and senior 3B Jeremy Hernandez's single drove in Caballero. The final run of the inning crossed the plate when Flanders was driven in on a sacrifice fly by sophomore RF James Boone.
Williams scored a run in the seventh inning, followed by another three-run inning for MU in the eighth. The big hit in the inning came from Boone, whose triple drove in a pair of runs. Boone was then driven in by Taylor. Boone was 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
Senior OF Ryan Rallo singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Rallo finished 2-for-5 on the night, adding another single in the seventh inning.
Sophomore RHP Nick Admire started for Missouri and gave up two runs, just one earned, and three hits in four innings.
