Tigers Wrap Up Exhibition Schedule on Wednesday

After opening the 2004-05 season with a 100-73 win over Central Missouri State in their exhibition opener last week, the University of Missouri men's basketball squad wraps up its preseason schedule on Wednesday against the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats were ranked No. 12 in the Division II Bulletin Preseason Poll on Oct. 20 and will be playing their first contest of the season on Wednesday.

Mike Kelly and Gary Link will be calling all of the action on KFRU and KLIK in Columbia. The contest can also be heard on the web at www.mutigers.com. Dan McLaughlin and Jon Sundvold will team on the television broadcast, which can be seen on the Mizzou Sports Network.

Quick Hits

Mizzou opened played its first game of the season and its first game in history at the Paige Sports Arena last Thursday, topping Central Missouri State, 100-73 ... All 12 Tigers who dressed for the contest saw action and 11 of them scored at least two points ... Mizzou was led in the contest by sophomore forward Linas Kleiza, who scored 19 points, pulled down four rebounds and recorded a game-high three blocks ... The 19 points would have been a career-high for Kleiza ... Kleiza was also named to the All-Big 12 Honorable Mention Team by members of the media from around the Big 12 ... Four Tigers reached double figures in the scoring column and six scored nine points or more on the night.

About the Bearcats

Coming off a 29-5 overall record and NCAA Division II Elite 8 appearance last year, the Bearcats have notched at least 20 wins in a school record five consecutive seasons. The Bearcats earned a No. 12 ranking in the Division II Bulletin Pre-Season poll (Oct. 20). Northwest will be without the services of senior guard Sky Wilson, who suffered a concussion in practice over the weekend. Leading all backcourt returners with 30 games started last year, Wilson put up 10.3 points and 3.5 assists per game. Head Coach Steve Tappmeyer is in his 17th season at Northwest Missouri State. He has registered a 307-157 mark during his time at NWMSU.

A Look Back ... MU vs. CMSU

The Tigers are coming off of a convincing 100-73 win over Central Missouri State last Thursday. Mizzou ran out to a 17-1 lead with 14:15 left in the first half and did not look back, leading by as many as 41 (69-28 with 16:58 left in the game) on their way to the win. MU shot a blazing 55.1 percent from the field and outscored the Mules, 48-12 in the paint while scoring 30 points off of 23 CMSU turnovers. Four Tigers reached double figures in the contest and six scored nine points or more. A few other notes from the contest ...

Missouri Team Notes

* Before the contest against the Mules, Mizzou hadn't scored 100 points in a game since notching 106 in their victory over UNC-Greensboro on December 21, 2003.

* As a team, the Tigers dished off 25 assists on 38 baskets against Central Missouri State, equaling the season-high from 2003-04, which was set in the win over UNLV.

Where Were You When ...

While we are not sure who ordered the first batch of nachos from the concession stand or who was the first to christen the men's room ... we do have a list of "firsts" that took place last Thursday night.

* The first point and first free throw in Paige Sports Arena history came at 19:27 of the first half when sophomore forward Linas Kleiza knocked down his first shot from the charity stripe.

* The first field goal, a two-point shot, in Paige Sports Arena history came at 18:25 of the first half, courtesy of senior guard Jason Conley.

* The first dunk in Paige Sports Arena history came at 17:24 in the first half, when sophomore forward Linas Kleiza slashed through the lane and raised for a two-handed flush.

* The first points of freshman forward Marshall Brown's career came at 15:36 of the first half when he converted a layup after being fouled. The first free throw of his career came moments later as he completed the three-point play.

* The first opponent point in Paige Sports Arena history came at 16:40 of the first half, when senior forward Mike Suggs sank the second of two free throws. It was also the first points of Suggs' Mules career.

* The first opponent field goal in Paige Sports Arena history came 13:23 of the first half, by junior forward Dwight Williams.

* Thursday's game was the first 100-point effort in the history of the Paige Sports Arena.
