The University of Missouri Women's Golf squad moved from fifth after Sunday's opening round into second on Monday after shooting a 302 in the second round of the Lady Razorback Invitational. The Tigers are now 10 strokes behind surprise tournament leader Iowa State, who opened the tournament with a 297 followed up by a 304 on Monday.
"We battled and played with a lot of focus today," Coach Stephanie Cooper said of her Tigers who equaled the best team round of the second day of play. "Our patience and discipline have been tested these last two rounds, but I like the discipline and intensity we are playing with right now."
Every member of the Tiger squad is in the top 40 heading into the final round and four are in the top 30. Sophomore Denise Knaebel continues to be the Tigers' top competitor and is in a tie for sixth place after a second-round 76. She is only three strokes out of the top three in the tournament and was one of three Tigers to shoot 76 on the day. The other two that registered 76's were junior Maria Ohlsson, who is in a tie for 14 at 154 and senior Mindy Bullard, who is in a tie for 26th with a total of 156.
One of the main reasons the Tigers made the jump in the standings was the outstanding play of junior Kelli Strubinger. After finishing the opening round in a tie for 51st with an 80, the St. Charles, Mo., native fired a two-over par 74 (her best round of the fall) to move into a tie for 18th heading into Tuesday's final round. Freshman Madde Augustsson rounded out the Tigers scoring on the day, firing an 81 despite recording five birdies in the round. She is in a tie for 39th with a total of 159.
The Tigers are looking for their fourth top five finish of the fall in four tournaments played. The Invitational is being played at the par-72, 6,015-yard Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, Arkansas. The Tigers will tee it up for the third round on Tuesday morning. For complete results and a recap of all of the action, log on to www.mutigers.com late tomorrow afternoon.
