MU Softball Sweeps Johnson County in Fall Scrimmage

Oct. 16, 2004

Columbia, Mo. - Competing in their only fall softball scrimmage of the season, the Missouri Tigers swept Johnson County Community College in three, five-inning games (5-0, 4-1, 4-0). All three of Missouri's pitchers found time on the mound, with senior Erin Kalka leading off in game one.

Game One Recap:

Senior pitcher Erin Kalka made her return to the mound for Missouri, shutting out the Lady Cavaliers 5-0. Tossing the entire five-inning game, the right-handed pitcher recorded 11 strikeouts and ended action refusing any hits, runs or walks.

The Tigers put their first run on the board with a single by junior third baseman Kendra Power. Power's hit allowed sophomore Leanne Bowers to cross home plate in the bottom of the first inning. Advancing to second on a wild pitch off of Johnson County pitcher Ashley McDugal, Power was able to round the bases off a sacrifice by newcomer Jaci Schuyler and returned home off of McDugal's second wild pitch of the game.

Missouri's final three runs of game one came in the fifth inning, with Power again singling, followed by a hit from senior shortstop Heather Kunkel in the top of MU's lineup. With Power in scoring position, Schuyler had a hard hitting single to center to drive home Power and place Kunkel on third. McDugal remained in the circle for the Lady Cavaliers, but with another wild pitch, allowed Schuyler to steal second. Missouri designated hitter A.J. White was next up to the plate, advancing Kunkel home off of a sacrifice fly. Sophomore catcher Kathy Masterson took Missouri's eighth hit of the game and earned her first RBI as Schuyler ran home for the Tigers' fifth and final run.

Game Two Recap:

In a game that came down to the final inning of play, Missouri pulled off its second win of the day 4-1 over the Lady Cavaliers. Scoring first for Missouri, newcomer Janessa Roening had a single to get things started for the Tigers in the first inning. After stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball, the Port Angeles, Wash., native came home off of a sacrifice fly by freshman Jen Bruck. Missouri and Johnson County remained tied at one run through four innings before the Tigers were able to break away in the fifth to secure the victory. With Roening on second base, sophomore Sarah Stringer took her turn at the plate recording her first double of the day with a hit to centerfield that advanced Roening home for MU run number two.

Redshirt freshman Micaela Minner returned from an injury suffered at the start of her 2004 season to drive in the final run of the game with a blast that brought Stringer across home plate for the fourth and final MU run.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Erica Peterson turned in the Tigers second win of the afternoon. Totaling five innings of action, Peterson allowed only three hits and one earned run, walking three batters and striking out seven opponents. Game Three Recap:

Making her collegiate pitching debut, freshman Jen Bruck of St. Peters, Mo., stepped onto the mound for the Tigers third and final game of the day against Johnson County Community College. Holding the Lady Cavaliers to only one hit in five innings of action, Bruck tallied four strikeouts and earned her first shutout of her career.

At the plate, the Tigers continued to dominate the day with junior Janessa Roening and sophomore Leanne Bowers both going yard to score two of MU's four runs of game three. Roening's long ball came at the bottom of the first inning as she pounded the ball over the right centerfield fence. Leading off for Missouri in the fifth inning, Bowers was able to run the bases after powering the ball over the right field fence. Both hits came off of Johnson County pitcher Ashley McDugal as she made her second appearance on the mound of the day.
