Sept. 28, 2004
COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri head women's basketball coach Cindy Stein and the University have agreed to a contract extension, Director of Athletics Mike Alden announced today. The agreement, which became effective on Sept. 8, runs through April 30, 2008.
The current agreement is the third extension of Stein's original contract, which was signed in 1998 and amended in 1999 and most recently in 2001. It increases Stein's base salary from $165,000 to $180,000 per year. The remaining terms of the contract remain unchanged.
"I am really excited to be a part of this program, and the improvements that Mike Alden has helped bring about give us all a lot to look forward to," Stein said. "It feels good to have the confidence of the administration as we move into the Paige Sports Arena. I would like to express my appreciation to Mike Alden, Chancellor Emeritus Richard Wallace, and Interim Chancellor Brady Deaton for their support of not only myself, but this entire program over the past six years. This program has come a long way, but we still have a lot of goals to reach."
Stein owns a 101-79 record (.561) over six seasons at Mizzou, and is 166-104 overall (.615) in nine seasons as a collegiate coach. She most recently led the Tigers to their second NCAA Tournament appearance this past season, and has led Missouri to the postseason in each of the last five years. That matches a school record first set 18 years ago (1981-82 through 1985-86). Included in this current stretch is a magical run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2001, when Missouri posted one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history with a 78-65 win at No. 4-ranked Georgia.
Three Stein recruits have been selected in the WNBA Draft in the past four seasons: Amanda Lassiter and Marlena "Pep" Williams in 2001, and Evan Unrau this past year. In addition, Missouri has had 25 selections to the Academic All-Big 12 teams in Stein's six seasons.
"Since Cindy Stein arrived here in 1998, she and her staff have done a tremendous job of building this program toward levels that we expect from each and every one of our programs," Alden said. "They have performed well on the court, but they are also getting the job done in the classroom and in the community. This extension is a reflection of our commitment to Coach Stein."
