Q&A with Megan Shelley

Sept. 21, 2004

Q: What's the biggest change from high school to college soccer?

A: "The biggest change from high school to college is definitely the level of play. Everything here is so much faster and every individual was the best player on their high school team, so the teams are a lot stronger."

Q: What do you expect from yourself this season?

A: "This season since I'm a red shirt, I expect to improve drastically. Derek is a great coach, so I expect to learn a lot from him. I know I have a lot of potential would really like to be able to remove my red shirt by proving myself to be one of the top two goalkeepers."

Q: What's the hardest part about being a student-athlete?

A: "The hardest part about being a student athlete is the amount of time that you don't have. Other people can afford to be unorganized or pull all-nighters with studying and stuff like that, but we have to manage our time better because we have practice and other soccer obligations on top of school."

Q: What's the best part about playing collegiate soccer?

A: The best part about being a collegiate athlete is probably the experience. It makes it a lot easier moving away from home and immediately having 23 friends because they are your teammates and we have some really great girls. Keeping in shape is awesome because we don't really have to worry about the freshman 15. The competition is also great. Having so many people support you is so nice too because here academics are so important. We also get noticed a lot, it's nice having people come up to you and say, "Hey you play on the soccer team don't you?"

Q: What about the Mizzou soccer team made you want to be here?

A: "The part of the Mizzou soccer team that made me want to be a part of it was the atmosphere. I think everyone here balances each other out. Everyone wants the same things and has the same goals. I also had heard nothing but good things about Coach Blitz and when I got here on my visit I thought this school would be the best place for me."

Q: We hear that you have a horse. Can you tell us what it's like to be a horse owner?

A: "Being a horse owner is awesome! I have had my horse for 8 years and she is definitely part of my family. It takes some time to go out to the barn and see her and ride and stuff but it is so relaxing. My horse is so affectionate and friendly. I am having a tough time not being able to see her since she's back at home, but I'm hoping to bring her to Columbia next year."
