A trio of Mizzou baseball players has been chosen on day one of the 2004 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, led by senior right-hander Danny Hill who was taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the third round with the 87th pick. Fellow right-handed pitcher, junior Garrett Broshuis was taken in the fifth round by the San Francisco Giants with the 160th pick overall. In the 11th round, the New York Yankees took senior first baseman Cody Ehlers with the 339th overall pick.
Rounds 1-18 were completed on Monday with 551 players being selected. The remainder of the draft will take place on Tuesday.
Hill was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection this season after leading the Tigers with 94 strikeouts. He was 5-5 on the year with a 4.39 ERA. Hill's third-round selection is the highest for a Missouri player since Dave Silvestri was taken in the second round by Houston in 1988.
Broshuis finished the season 11-0, becoming just the third pitcher in MU history to reach 11 wins in a season. He was selected to the All-Big 12 First Team this season and was an Academic All-Big 12 and Academic All-America selection.
Ehlers lead Mizzou in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.364), home runs (18) and RBI (71). He was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Tournament.
In addition, a high-school standout who had signed a National Letter of Intent to enroll at Missouri this fall and play for the Tigers was drafted in the first round on Monday. Due to NCAA rules, his name cannot be released by Mizzou at this time since the University has already published its allowable one-time release of information to the media.
