Radek, Jenkins Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

DALLAS - Two Mizzou senior men's golfers, Michael Radek (Chicago, Ill. / St. Ignatius HS) and David Jenkins (Springfield, Mo. / Glendale HS / SMS), have been named to the 2004 Men's Golf Academic All-Big 12 Team, officials from the league office announced Tuesday. Radek earned first-team honors, while Jenkins was a second-team recipient.

The Tiger pair are two of 28 men's golfers honored.

Radek earned first-team honors for the second straight year, and is Mizzou's stroke leader this season at 73.58 after playing in all 11 tournaments to date. He has two top-five finishes this season, including a fourth-place showing at the Johnny Owens Invitational in Lexington, Ky., earlier this month. Radek has carded season-low rounds of 67 in both the fall and spring.

Jenkins was given recognition for the first time. This season, he is second on the team with a 73.71 stroke average in 11 tournaments. Jenkins has five top-10 placings this year, including two top-five showings in the fall season. His best round of 67 came in the fall at the Nestl? Purina Classic in St. Charles, Mo.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's golf academic all-league squad consisted of 18 first team members combined with 10 on the second team. First team members are those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.

Many of these student-athletes will compete at the eighth annual Big 12 Conference Men's Golf Championship April 26-27 for the seventh time in eight years at Prairie Dunes Golf & Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Texas is the two-time defending Big 12 champion after firing an 894 last year. Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan was 1993 medalist with a 208. In the seven previous Big 12 Men's Championships, Oklahoma State has captured three Big 12 titles followed by Texas with two, and Kansas and Baylor with one each.
