COLUMBIA, Mo. - What is sure to be a busy weekend for Missouri Tiger post-collegians this weekend will kick-off this Friday as events begin at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Former Tigers, and current staff, Christian Cantwell and Derrick Peterson are in the European country, representing Team USA in the men's shot put and men's 800-meter run, respectively. Also this weekend, former Tigers and current track and field staff, Michelle Moran and Fiona Asigbee will compete in the USATF Indoor Combined Event Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Cantwell (Eldon, Mo.) was a seven-time all-American and six-time Big 12 Champion as a Tiger. Winning his first USA Track & Field National Championship last weekend, Cantwell was happy but wants to throw big for the world to see.
"I felt like this was a good effort today," Cantwell said last weekend after winning the crown. "My main objective was to win here and then compete well. The distance I threw was secondary to winning. My objective at the World Indoor Championships is to throw a personal best of 21.96 (72 feet-0.75 inches)."
--- Preview of the IAAF shot put event by Ed Gordon for the IAAF: New US champion Christian Cantwell is the season leader at 21.95 [72-?] (increased from last year's PB of 20.86 [68-5]), and he owns four of the year's top performances, prompting glowing reports from eyewitnesses praising his recent technique refinements.
Joachim Olsen of Denmark exploded after nearly one-month's rest with a 21.63 [70-11?] in Tallinn last week and appears ready to challenge the young American.
Should that pair falter in the least in Budapest, then a number of others move into challenging positions for the top medals.
Cantwell's teammate, Reese Hoffa, had a superb month with a 21.05 [69-?] PB, followed by a 20.97 [68-9?] in the US Championships.
The defending champion, Manuel Martinez of Spain (20.78 [68-2?])-who dramatically out dueled Olsen in Vienna two years ago to win the European title-and Britain's mammoth Carl Myerscough (20.91 [68-7?] last Saturday for his US university team) appear ready to make a move up, along with Holland's Rutger Smith, who won his national title with a NR 20.75 [68-1] less than two weeks ago.
One of the lessons gleaned from Paris last year is to never overlook the top Belarus throwers, and with a 20.85 [68-5] more than a month ago in his single appearance, Andrey Mikhnevich, the World outdoor champion, is a definite threat.
Yuriy Belonog of Ukraine, the indoor bronze medallist last year, opened the year with a significant 20.47 [67-2], and then dropped out of sight, but he could be poised to spring a surprise in Budapest. ---
Derrick Peterson (Atlanta, Ga.) is another former Tiger competing in Budapest this weekend. Peterson will be competing in the 800-meter run, an event Peterson won two NCAA Championships with in 1999. A six-time all-American, Peterson also qualified for the U.S. National team in 2001 when he finished second in the USA Outdoor Championships that year.
Preliminaries for the 800-meter run will occur on Friday, with semi-finals happening on Saturday, and the final to be held on Sunday. For the men's shot put, a preliminary round is held with the throwers split into two groups on Saturday. Those who qualify will participate in the shot put final on Sunday morning.
Michelle Moran (Wildwood, Mo.) and Fiona Asigbee (Walford, Iowa) will compete in the USA Track and Field Indoor Combined Event Championships this weekend in the pentathlon event. All five events of the pentathlon will take place Sunday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Moran took the Big 12 crown in the heptathlon in 2000 and competed in the USATF Olympic Trials that year. Asigbee won both the indoor and outdoor combined event Big 12 titles in 2003 and has already qualified for July's USATF Olympic Trials.
