Missouri Splits at Mardi Gras Tournament

In the second day of play at the Ragin Cajun Mardi Gras Tournament, the Missouri Tigers beat the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin University, 4-1.

The winning play came in the fifth inning on a run by freshman first baseman Alli Kennewell. Freshman catcher A.J. White drove her home on a double to left field

The Tigers started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning getting a run by junior shortstop Heather Kunkel. She advanced home on an error by the Lumberjacks.

Sophomore Samantha Fleeman pulled double duty for the Tigers both pitching and hitting. On the mound she had six strikeouts, one run and no walks and was one for two hitting. Freshman Erica Petersen and junior Erin Kaka came in to pitch relief in the top of fifth innings getting a combined nine strikeouts, three hits and no runs.

The Lumberjacks gained momentum in the bottom of the third inning when second baseman Heather Herbet doubled to right field but pitcher Samantha Fleeman struck out the next batter to end the inning.

The Lumberjacks tied the score in the top of the fourth inning on an unearned run by Woydziak.

The Tigers got a run in the bottom of the fourth inning from freshman Alli Kennewell. She was driven home on a single up the middle from sophomore third baseman Kendra Power, making the score 2-1.

The Tigers scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman catcher A.J. White drove both sophomore pitcher Samantha Fleeman and freshman first baseman Alli Kennewell home on a double, making the score at the bottom of the fifth inning 4-1

The Tigers had seven hits in the game going four for seven.

In the second game of the day the Tigers lost to host, tenth ranked, University of Louisiana-Lafayette 1-0.

Sophomore Samantha Fleeman started in the circle for the Tigers. She had ten strikeouts, no hits and no runs before freshman Erica Petersen and junior Erin Kalka came in pitching relief in the top of the fifth inning and sixth innings. Petersen and Kalka combined for four strikeouts, one walk and one run.

The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Michelle Bergeaux advanced home on an error, making the score 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning.

The Tigers tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh but fell short as Cajun pitcher Brooke Mitchell struck out all three batters, giving the Cajuns the 1-0 win.

The Tigers will play Prairie View A&M University in their final game of the Ragin Cajun Mardi Gras Tournament tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
