To the Tigers
For Starters...
The Tigers will take their undefeated 3-0 record to the east coast this weekend as they take part in the Beach Blast in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Last week, at the Oakland A's Spring Training Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., Mizzou defeated Nevada (8-7) on Friday and had two wins over Portland (13-0 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday).
MU will open up play in South Carolina at 4 p.m. EST/3 p.m. CST (Note time change) on Thursday against Coastal Carolina.
The Tigers will then face Rider on Friday, Coastal Carolina again on Saturday and Albany on Sunday.
This weekend's games can be heard on the ZRG Radio Network (KTGR 1580 in Columbia). The broadcast can also be heard on www.KTGR.com.
The home portion of the MU schedule will open up next weekend as Youngstown State visits Taylor Stadium for a three-game series.
A Perfect Start
The Tigers are 3-0 for the first time since the 1999 season. MU picked up a win over Nevada and two wins over Portland last weekend in the season opening Oakland A's Spring Training Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.
The 1999 team won its first four games before losing the fifth game of the year and finished 37-19 on the season.
The last team to start was 5-0 was the 1987 team under Head Coach Gene McArtor. That team began the year with seven straight wins.
No Runs For You
Mizzou's shutout of Portland (13-0) last Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz. was the first shutout by a MU team since April 29, 2003 when the Tigers defeated St. Louis in the "Wood Bat Classic" by a score of 9-0.
Junior RHP Erik Dessau and senior RHP Mark Alexander teamed up on the mound for the shutout of Portland. Dessau started on Saturday and pitched six inning, allowing seven hits to record the win. Alexander came on in relief, giving up just one hit and striking out five in three innings of work to record the save.
The Hits Keep on Coming
Two Tiger hitters have begun the season by recording hits in each of the first three games of the year. Senior 1B Cody Ehlers and sophomore SS Zane Taylor have put together three-game hitting streaks to begin the 2004 season.
Opening Act
Missouri picked up its second straight win in season openers by defeating Nevada 8-7 last Friday in Phoenix, Ariz. Last year, the Tigers defeated UNC-Wilmington 12-1 to start the season. That win snapped a string of three straight season-opening defeats for Mizzou. MU Head Coach Tim Jamieson is now 6-3-1 at MU in season openers.
