Softball Loses Two at Stanford Invitational

In the first game of the Stanford Invitational the Missouri Tigers (2-4) lost 2-0 to the Tigers of Pacific University (7-0). The Tigers entered the game with a record of 2-3 and Pacific entered the contest with a record of 6-0 The Pacific Tigers started the scoring in the second inning, after designated hitter Jennifer Curtier scored off of a single down the left side by third baseman Crystal Presson.

Pitching for the Tigers was sophomore Samantha Fleeman, who was able to hold Pacific to four scoreless innings before the Tigers got a home run in the top of the seventh inning. Second baseman Lizzie Hagan had the home run to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Fleeman ended the game with five strikeouts and one walk.

Missouri received hits from freshman catcher A.J. White, junior shortstop Heather Kunkel, freshman second baseman Sarah Stringer and sophomore leftfielder Ashley Hays.

The Tigers tried to get a scoring drive going in the bottom of the seventh inning, after getting on base with a double by junior shortstop Heather Kunkel but the drive fell short as the Tigers failed to get a base hit.

In the second game of the day the Tigers lost a tough game to the host, #10 Stanford University. The winning play of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning on a run by Stanford centerfielder Catalina Morris off of a hit by shortstop Lauren Lappin.

Pitching for the Tigers was junior Erin Kalka who started the game with three scoreless innings. Kalka had a huge save in the bottom of the sixth inning striking out second baseman Meghan Stickler with the bases loaded. Kalka ended the game with nine strikeouts and no walks.

The Tigers tried to get a scoring drive going in the top of the third inning when freshman Alli Kennewell walked onto base. Sophomore Ashley Hays kept the drive alive advancing to second base on a two base error by Stanford but the Tigers failed to score when freshman centerfielder Leanne Bowers and freshman second baseman Sarah Stringer both struck out to end the inning.

The Tigers were able to get a run on the board in the top of the sixth inning when freshman Leanne Bowers scored on a single up the middle by senior Morgan LeCluyse.

The Cardinal were coming off of 5-0 a win over Santa Clara University and improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Tigers drop to 2-5 on the season.

The Tigers will be back in action at the Stanford Invitational tomorrow afternoon facing Santa Clara University at 1 p.m CST.
