Tigers Holly Scherder (Frankford, Mo.) and Ann Snider (Harrisonville, Mo.) will make the Missouri women weight throw a compelling event this season as both broke the school record at the Missouri Invitational, Friday at the Hearnes Fieldhouse.

Scherder held the record for about 30 minutes until her friend and teammate, Snider, broke the record on her final attempt. Scherder had her best attempt of the night on her first throw, breaking the record set by Brooke Ennen in 2003 by just over six inches. Snider's throw of 58 feet, 8? inches (17.90m) beat that of Scherder's by two inches (17.85m). Scherder, with a personal best, finished in third after Southeast Missouri State's Heather Jenkins matched Scherder's. The tie was broken on a Jenkins early throw that was longer than Scherder's.

The competition for this early season meet included Drake, Oral Roberts, Southeast Missouri State, and UMKC from NCAA Division I.

Missouri had a good meet overall having the number one collegian in 13 events.

In his first face as a Tiger, Marcus Mayes (Sand Springs, Okla.) won the 800-meter race by just under three seconds (1:57.42). Mayes was out in front for the entire race, leading by nearly 30 meters at one point. The freshman was an AAU and USATF Junior national champ in the 800-meter race.

Also in his first collegiate race, Jimmie Jones (Detroit, Mich.) finished as the first collegian to cross the finish line, running a competitive race with Tiger Volunteer Assistant, Eric Potter. Jones finished the race in 1:12.77. Potter's time was 1:12.17.

Junior Neville Miller (St. Louis, Mo.) came back from fourth in the final 150 meters to win the 1000-meter run. Miller defeated four-time defending Missouri Invitational champion and former Tiger, Derrick Peterson. Peterson put on a last-second surge on the backstretch but fell 11 tenths of a second short to Miller's time of 2:28.16.

Senior Ryan Hampton (Liberty, Mo.) and Tipper O'Brien (Kirkwood, Mo.) took the one-two spots in the Mile run. Hampton won with a time of 4:15.51. Matt Noonan (Baldwin City, Kan.) took fourth in the event.

Junior transfer Conrad Woolsey (Excelsior Springs, Mo.) brought back second overall in the shot put. Woolsey finished number one in his event as a collegian. Former Tiger Christian Cantwell in a homecoming of sorts came within five inches of his indoor personal best with his throw of 68 feet, 3? inches. Cantwell, however, did break the Hearnes Fieldhouse record previously held by him. Sophomore Bill Hobson (Katy, Texas) took third in event, throwing 55-8?.

In the weight throw, the Tigers went two-three-four with Adam Burla, Jason Morris, and Adam Noteis.

Chris Horn (O'Fallon, Mo.) had third place finishes in both the long and triple jumps. Jason Edmonds (Farmington, Mo.) won the high jump with a mark of 6-11.

On the women's side - Janae Strickland, Ashley Patten, and Jill Petersen along with Ann Snider won event championships. Strickland took first in the shot put event, Jill Petersen won the Mile run by over three seconds, and Ashley Patten brought a strong 2:58.81 performance in the 1000-meter run.

The Tigers will host their second of three consecutive home meets next Friday, as Mizzou will host Kansas and Kansas State in the MU-KU-KSU Triangular. Both field and track events begin at 4 p.m. History the triangular has proven to be an exciting event, scored by combined both men's and women's scores.
