Women's Basketball

Statements From Cindy Stein and Mike Alden

Jan. 12, 2004

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri women's basketball Head Coach Cindy Stein has issued the following statement regarding the post-game incident following Saturday night's Kansas-Missouri contest:

"After reviewing what happened after Saturday's game, it is clear that several players reacted in an inappropriate manner. We will be disciplining two of our players for their actions, and will by no means try to rationalize or justify their behavior. It is not a reflection of the University of Missouri, and we will not tolerate it.

"We certainly hold sportsmanship to a higher standard at the University of Missouri. We have already recommended action to be taken on our behalf and we will accept any further action that the Big 12 Conference office finds necessary at this time.

"We have addressed the issues of sportsmanship that concern us, and will be held accountable to them."

Missouri Director of Athletics Michael Alden has issued the following statement:

"What transpired Saturday night was an unfortunate incident, and not indicative of proper behavior at the University of Missouri. We take great pride in how we conduct ourselves, and this incident underscores the need to continue to focus on, and reinforce, good sportsmanship.

"Cindy Stein and I have reviewed the incident, and we both met with the team to reiterate the importance of sporting behavior. She has also informed me of her recommended disciplinary action for two of her players, and I fully support her decision. We are submitting a full report to the conference office today.

"I would also like to commend our game operations personnel on their management of our sporting events. We have earned a solid reputation nationwide for our efforts, and will continue to work to maintain that reputation."
