One of the alltime greats in Mizzou Football history was lost last week, as former quarterback Gary Lane died at his home in Kampsville, Ill., at the age of 60. Lane was a three-time All-Big Eight Conference quarterback who led Mizzou to a No. 6 final rating in 1965. Only one MU football team ever finished higher-ranked.
After his playing career, Lane became an accomplished National Football League official who worked two Super Bowls.
Playing for legendary Coach Dan Devine, Lane led MU to records of 7-3, 6-3-1 and 8-2-1, culminating with a 20-18 win over Florida and Steve Spurrier in the 1966 Sugar Bowl.
His MU career earned Mr. Lane honorable mention on MU's All-Century team and a place in the MU Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame, as well as the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Hanks-Gubser Funeral Home in Hardin, Ill. At Mr. Lane's request, his body will be cremated and no services are scheduled. In lieu of flowers please send a memorial to the Gary Lane School Fund for East Alton/Wood River High School - 777 N. Wood River Ave., Wood River, IL 62095 (618-254-3151).
