Tiger Tennis Tops Kansas, Clinches Border War Championship

The University of Missouri tennis team defeated Kansas today 4-3 for the teams first victory over the Jahawks in the last 31 attempts. Not only does the win move the Tigers to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in conference, the victory gave the Tigers three points and clinched the innuagural Border War championship over the Jayhawks.
The nationally ranked doubles pair of Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova won as did the Tiger duo of Mary Barry and Hana Kraftova to win the doubles point. Juric and Sevcikova then won their singles matches and Lucie Ruskova won the final singles match to clinch the victory and Border War championship for the Tigers.
Missouri head coach Blake Starkey said, "It feels great to clinch the Border War but if it wasn't for a lot of other MU sports we wouldn't have been in position to do this today." Coach Starkey went onto say, "While I'm very happy for our girls, this was a strange match." MU/KU is one of the best rivalries in sports, but it's been a little too one-sided. One of my personal goals has always been for our girls to end the streak the Jayhawks had on us. It's sort of a wierd feeling. I have so much respect for Kilmeny and the KU players. Heck, we recruited half of them. They are a very cool group, and are extremely well-coached. Both teams played amazing in spots today, and there were a few matches that weren't so great because of nerves on both sides. But regardless, I'm glad we came through as a team. Tonight, Mary, Kristina and Hana all came up just short while Lucie clinched it. But all in all, this was an entire team effort, and I'm very proud of our players." The victory gave the Tigers 20 points out of a possible 39 points and clinched the title for Missouri. The Tigers now take a break and will play their next game on March 22nd at Syracuse.
