LAS CRUCES, N.M.-- - The Missouri Tigers won two games on Saturday in the Troy Cox Invitational, including a 17-4 blowout victory over New Mexico State.
The only run of the Missouri and Western Illinois game was scored by the Tigers in the first inning, after Joanne Loethen reached on a single. She advanced to second base on a Heather Kunkel single and was driven in when Rachael McGinnis doubled to left.
Erin Kalka pitched a four hit complete game to move to 5-3 on the year. It was her sixth complete game of the year and her second shutout. Loethen was 2-for-2 on the day to lead Mizzou at the plate.
After the 1-0 win against WIU, Mizzou found some offense against NMSU, as it connected on three homeruns in the first two innings, and had a total of four homers for the game.
The Tigers scored two runs in each of the first three innings. Rachael McGinnis got MU on the board in the first inning with a 2-run homerun. In the second inning, Kendra Power lead off with a homerun and three batters later, Heather Kunkel connected for a homerun of her own.
Power again struck in the third inning. After Daisy Mettlach and Ashley Hays each reached on singles, Power drove both in with a double to left field giving MU a 6-1 lead. The Aggies cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Jasmine Flores hit a three run homer to make the score 6-4. The Tigers got a run back in the seventh on another homerun, this one a leadoff homer by Daisy Mettlach.
MU then turned the game into a blowout with an 10-run seventh inning. Kristen Burke had a homerun and a triple in the inning. Kunkel, Mettlach and Samantha Fleeman all had doubles in the inning and three others had singles.
Missouri's scheduled game against Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne on Sunday has been cancelled due to IPFW's travel commitments. Next up for Mizzou is a trip to Los Angeles, Calif. for the UCLA Tournament next weekend.
