
Mizzou Falls to Penn State at Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif.-- - The Missouri softball team concluded play in the Stanford Invitational on Sunday by falling to Penn State 3-2. The Tigers finish with a 1-4 record at the Stanford Invitational and are now 5-5 on the season.
Penn State, who Mizzou had defeated 3-1 on Friday, got on the board first, scoring one run in top of the fourth inning.
Mizzou was held scoreless until the fifth inning. After the first two Tigers batters in the bottom of the fifth were retired, Jeni Schellert reached after being hit by a pitch. She advanced to third on an error and scored on a single by Joanne Loethen, who was 2-for-3 for Mizzou. Kendra Power scored the second run of the inning as Daisy Mettlach drove her in with a base hit up the middle.
The Nittany Lions rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead. MU attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, getting two runners on base, but was unable get a runner across the plate.
Samantha Fleeman pitched a complete game-four hitter for MU. She struck out four, walked one, and gave up seven hits. She drops to 2-2 on the season with the loss.
Missouri will travel to Las Cruces, N. Mex. for the Troy Cox Invitational next weekend. The Tigers will open play against Colorado State on Friday morning.
