Q & A with Lucie Ruskova

Dec. 16, 2003

Q: Where did you grow up, and what was it like there?
A: I grew up in the city Teplice. Teplice is a pretty spa town northwest of the Czech Republic, surrounded by the mountains. It is one-hour drive from Prague.

Q: When you're not practicing your game, how do you spend the remainder your time?
A: There is no doubt about the answer to this question and all my teammates would agree. I either studying or exchanging text messages with my boyfriend, sometimes I do them both at the same time.

Q: Why did you choose to come to the University of Missouri?
A: Blake at Czech Nationals offered me a scholarship, and I thought it was a good opportunity for me to get to know United States and earn a degree there. I chose Mizzou over the University of Oklahoma, because of Blake's approach.

Q: What did you decide to major in, and what do you plan on doing after graduation?
A: I am majoring in Marketing and minoring in German. After graduation I probably finish my Master's degree at home.

Q: Who has been your biggest inspiration for all that you have accomplished, and why?
A: My biggest inspiration throughout all the years was my family and last few years my boyfriend. My brother inspired me to start playing tennis, and my parents supported me all throughout my tennis career. I would like to thank them for their awesome and huge support in academics, tennis, and my life overall. My biggest inspiration in my life and tennis for last few years became my boyfriend.

Q: Who is your favorite tennis player?
A: There is no doubt that my best tennis player is Michal Hruby.

Q: How do you describe yourself, as a person, and as a part of the MU tennis team?
A: Me as a person? I think I am very sensitive, emotional and sometimes moody as well. I was also told that I can be pretty aggressive on the court sometimes, which I think is true.

Q: What is your most anticipated game for this season and why?
A: I didn't think about it yet. All the games are important and I can't see any big difference among them. I don't consider games as more or less important.

Q: What team or particular player, do you feel is going to be the biggest challenge to you in this upcoming season?
A: I have no idea and I would say the same as in the previous question.

Q: What do you expect from yourself as a player in the 2003-2004 season, are there any improvements that you have been working on?
A: Well, everyone is working on some improvement all the time. I think I need to work on the psychical part of my game more. And as a player in the upcoming season, I hope and will try to perform my best every time; I hope to positively contribute to our team and, be supportive of my teammates all the time.

Q: Can you give us some of your speculation of the upcoming season, including which player or players you feel will be most valuable to the team?
A: It's a team and everyone has her particular role, and personal strengths, everyone brings something to the team, so it's really tough to say someone contributes more and someone less. I think we all form a cool team because we know how to play good tennis, support each other, and we know how to have fun together.
