Missouri Swimming and Diving Hosts Truman State

Columbia, Mo.- The University of Missouri swimming and diving teams host the three-time NCAA Division II champion, Truman State Bulldogs. On Saturday the women's teams will travel to Lawrence, KS to battle the Jayhawks in a Border War dual meet.

Scouting the Bulldogs

The Truman State women's swim team enters the 2003-04 season as the three-time defending national champions in NCAA Division II.

Truman State returns 14 of 18 members of last year's national championship team. Six of the returners are reigning national champions while five swimmers hold NCAA Division II national records.

The Truman State men's team enters the 2003-04 season with a very talented group of swimmers. The men's team has six seniors that are three-time letterwinners and also returns six All-Americans from last year's squad.

The Tiger men's swimming team started off slow in their dual meet against Truman State, but the Tigers regrouped and pulled off a hard earned victory, 119-86.

The men ended up winning 8 out of 11 events in the meet to improve to 3-1 in dual meets for the season, including three straight victories. Tyler Belanger had three first place finishes in the 50 (21.48) and 100 freestyle (47.32) and as a member of the 400 freestyle relay team (3:11.53) with Chris Lukas, Kyle Sanders and Radu Miclaus. Senior Matt Ferrarelli won the 100 backstroke (52.47) and 400 individual medley (4:03.19). Senior Dane Pedersen won the 1000 freestyle (9:54.70) while Miclaus won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.88 and Matt North won the 100 breaststroke (59.22) to round out the top finishers.

The Tiger women's swim team started off slow in their dual meet against Truman state, trailing the Bulldogs by 20 points after five events. The Tigers regrouped however and the women came out of the pool with a win, 122-83.

Rebecca Wolfe won the 400 IM with a time of 4:31.95 outtouching the Bulldog's Kelli Dudley (4:32.31). The Tigers responded to Wolfe's efforts to win the next six events to close out the meet. Including taking the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke, with Leslie Hoh (1:06.83), Mariona Costa (1:07.03)and Tiffany Bohon (1:07.23), to seal the victory.

Other top finishers included Liz Schoborg winning the 100 butterfly (57.46). Andrea Nigh and Ellen Cross finishing first and second in the 100 freestyle. Sarah Lo and Amanda Morford doing the same in the 100 backstroke. Katy Chandler winning the 500 freestyle (5:01.35) and Wolfe placing third with a time of 5:03.13. The team of Cross, Morford, Lindsay Palbykin and Nigh won the 400 freestyle relay (3:31.53). Palbykin also added a second place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:55.08).

Scouting the Jayhawks

The University of Kansas women's swimming and diving team has started the season strong with victories of the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.

In a tri-meet against Iowa and Northern Iowa, Kansas finished the day with eight first place finishes and four second place finishes. The Jayhawks defeated Iowa by a score of 131-130 while defeating Northern Iowa 230-31.

The Jayhawks also added a sixth place finish at the Big 12 Relays.

The No. 21 Tigers kept their dual meet win streak alive with a 170-126 victory over arch-rival Kansas. The win extended the women's win streak to 16 straight dual meet victories dating back to February 3, 2001. The win also marks the third straight victory against Kansas.

The Tigers won 11 out of 16 events enroute to their largest margin of victory ever against Kansas. The meet started with the 200 medley relay team of Sarah Lo, Tiffany Bohon, Liz Schoborg and Andrea Nigh winning the race in a new MU Natatorium pool record of 1:45.61. The Jayhawks won the next event, the 1000 freestyle, but the Tigers then preceded to take the top spot in the next seven swimming events to easily distance themselves from Kansas.

Andrea Nigh continued her own personal win streak by picking up three wins in three races, winning the 50 (24.15) and 100 freestyle (53.05) to go with her medley relay victory. Nigh has not loss in any event, relay or individual, this season.

Sarah Lo added two individual wins (100 and 200 backstroke) to go with her medley relay victory. Other first place finishers were Rebecca Wolfe in the 200 butterfly (2:04.09) and Liz Schoborg in the 100 butterfly (57.40).

In the diving well, Anna Massey posted first and second place finishes on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Massey won the 3-meter competition with a score of 254.40 and added a second place finish on the 1-meter with a score of 237.53.
