Gold Takes 1-0 Lead in Fall World Series

The Mizzou Gold team opened the 2003 Fall World Series by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning on its way to a 10-2 win in game one of the intersquad series. The two teams will continue the series at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Taylor Stadium.

The first three batters for the gold squad reached base in the top of the first off the Black team's starter, Nathan Culp. Josiah Holst singled, Trevor Helms reached on a fielder's choice and Jeremy Hernandez walked to lead the bases. Each would later score in the inning.

Gold added another run in the second inning when a double by Adam Garrett drove in Gary Arndt.

The Black squad scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third inning. Scott Fisher led off with a double and scored on a Brandon Patek single. Patek would later score on a single up the middle by Tyler Williams.

The Gold team added a run in the fifth and crossed the plate four times in the sixth inning. Hunter Mense, Arndt, Holst each singled and Helms had a two-run triple in the sixth. Gold added its final run in the ninth.

Holst and Mense were each 3-for-4 in the game, while three others added two hits for the gold squad. Patek was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Black team.

Erik Dessau went six innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits to get the win. He struck out five and walked only one. Michael Cole pitched a perfect two innings in relief and Max Scherzer struck out the side in the ninth to seal with win.

The series continues with Game two on Sunday followed by Games 3-5 on Monday through Wednesday at Taylor Stadium.
