Melissa Peabody Earns Big 12 Player of the Week Honor

Oct. 22, 2003

DALLAS, TEXAS -- Missouri's Melissa Peabody, Texas' Alex Gagarin, and Nebraska's Jessie Bruch were named Big 12 Soccer Players of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Peabody was Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Gagarin was Defensive Player of the Week, and Bruch was Newcomer of the Week.

Peobody, a junior forward, scored seven points in Missouri's win over then-No. 4 Texas A&M, the Tigers' first conference win of the season. The St. Louis, Mo., native recorded a hat trick, including the game-tying and game-winning goals. She also dished out an assist in the Tigers' 5-4 come-from-behind victory.

Gagarin, a junior goalkeeper, surrendered only one goal in Texas' two conference wins last weekend. Against Missouri, the Austin, Texas, native faced 11 shots and turned away all but one while making a season-best six saves. Gagarin recorded her second shutout of the year and made four saves in UT's victory over Iowa State. She now holds a 3-0 record in Big 12 games and boasts a team-low 1.00 goals-against average for the year.

Bruch, a freshman midfielder/forward, scored the game-winning goal with just five seconds on the clock to help Nebraska beat Oklahoma State. The St. Louis, Mo., native led NU with 11 shots over the weekend, including three shots on goal. She also provided the game-winner vs. OSU last week and has six goals on the year and 13 points.
