Hans Uldal and Knut Sommerfeldt in Top 5 After Day 1 of the Decathlon

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Missouri men and women's track and field teams had an excellent start to the Florida Relays today in Gainesville, Florida. Big 12 pentathlon champion Fiona Asigbee leads after one day of competition in the heptathlon while Tiger newcomer Hans Uldal stands in second place and Big 12 heptathlon champion Knut Sommerfeldt is in fourth after the first day of competition in the decathlon.

Asigbee, a senior captain from Walford, Iowa, never finished worst than fifth in any of the first four events and she finished second in the 100 meter hurdles and high jump where she a personal best jump of 5 feet, 9.25 inches. Asigbee leads the competition with a point total of 3372; she is followed by Antoinette Wilks of South Carolina with 3188 points. Two Tigers and one former Tiger occupy the next three positions; senior Abbe Ohneck is in third place with a score of 3130, former Tiger Michelle Moran stands in fourth at 3071 points, and freshman Jessica Stockard is in fifth with a total of 3070 points. The heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the long jump, javelin throw, and 800 meter run.

Fred Townsend of South Carolina leads the decathlon with a point total of 3988; Townsend won the 100-meter dash, high jump and 400 meters. Tiger freshman Hans Uldal is on his heels in second place with a score of 3844 and teammate and two-time defending Big 12 decathlon champion Knut Sommerfeldt stands in fourth with a total of 3735 points. The decathlon will conclude tomorrow with the 110 hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500 meter run.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Florida Relays, one of the most prestigious collegiate track and field events. Events run through Saturday where 47 Tiger athletes will compete against 46 other schools.
