Day Two of Phillips 66 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships ended with the Missouri's women's swimming and diving team in fifth place with 145 points, trailing Kansas (147.5), Iowa State (155), Texas A&M (219) and Texas (402). The men's team remained in third (236.5) behind Texas A&M (308) and Texas (356.5) at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
The meet started with the men's 1-meter diving. The Tigers finished third, fourth and sixth. Freshman Evan Watters scored a 310.15 in his first Big 12 Championship to finish in third. Senior Jamie Sweeney finished behind Watters with 306.35 for fourth place. Freshman Aaron Wionzek finished sixth with a 300.35.
The first swimming event of the evening was the men's 500 freestyle. Senior Dane Pedersen finished seventh with a time of 4:36.77. Sophomore Blake Davis won the consolation championship with a time of 4:37.76 followed by three Tigers. Freshman Wade Pennington (4:42.86), junior Dustin McKnight (4:45.23) and junior Eric Sullins (4:49.40) finished tenth, eleventh and twelfth.
In the women's 500 freestyle senior Katy Chandler finished eighth with a time of 5:00.68. Junior Rebecca Wolfe won the consolation championship with a career best time of 4:54.92. Her time just missed the NCAA Provisional qualifying time, but it placed her fourth all-time in school history.
Matt Ferrarelli provisionally qualified for the 200 individual medley with his third place time of 1:48.20. Sophomore Matt North cracked the school's all-time top-5 in the 200 IM with his time of 1:51.87. His time places him fourth on the Missouri all-time list and was good enough for a tenth place finish.
Senior Chrissy Frieh just missed setting a career best in the 200 individual medley. She finished with a time of 2:05.76. Three-time Olympian Joscelian Yeo (Texas) set a new meet record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.10.
Tyler Belanger set a new career high in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle earlier in the day with a time of 20.57. Then broke it again by .01 hundredths of a second with a time of 20.56 in the finals, finishing in eighth place.
In the women's 50 freestyle, junior Andrea Nigh finished sixth with a time of 23.48. Her time is a NCAA provisional qualifying time. Freshman Liz Schoborg set a new career best with a time of 23.79 in the consolation finals.
Freshman Joanna Lawrence was the lone Tiger diver in the finals of the 3-meter dive. She finished eighth with a score of 475.50.
The men's 200 freestyle relay team of Belanger, Chris Lukas, Ryan Searby and Chris Musfeldt finished third with a time of 1:23.75. The time was a season's best.
The last event of the night saw the women's 200 freestyle relay team of Nigh, Schoborg, Ellen Cross and Sarah Lo finish fourth with a NCAA provisional time of 1:33.53. That time ranks second on the school's all-time list.
The Tigers return to the pool tomorrow for Day 3 of the Championships. The preliminaries start at 10:30 a.m. with the finals starting at 5:30 p.m. Complete results are will be available after each day at the Big 12 website at www.big12sports.com.
