The Big 12 Conference today announced the 2003 Women's and Men's Swimming and Diving Academic All-Big 12 Team. A school record 28 Tigers were named Academic All-Big 12, surpassing the previous high of 24 student-athletes in 1998-99. The Tigers had the most student-athletes honored amongst all Big 12 institutions.
Among the 96 total honorees, there were five nominated with a 4.0 grade point average. The Tigers held claim to three of those with 4.0 GPA's. Molly Christensen and Belinda Wood each achieved a 4.0 GPA during both the 2002 fall and 2002 spring semesters for the women's team. Stephen Darmitzel represented the men's team with his 4.0 GPA.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women's swimming and diving academic all-league squad consisted of 75 combined first team members, women's and men's, with 21 on the second team, both women and men. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade-point average, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
