Lincoln, Neb. - The University of Missouri women's golf team put up a third-round team-best score of 299 on Tuesday to climb from sixth to second on the final day of the Chip-N Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. The Tigers finished the tourney only three strokes behind tourney champion Iowa State (914) and two strokes ahead of third-place Kansas State.
Four Tigers placed in the top 17 of the tournament, a trend that Coach Stephanie Cooper hopes will continue as the season and the team progresses.
"Coming from sixth after the first two rounds and moving into second today says a lot about the character and competitive spirit that exists on this team," Cooper said. "We played well for it being our first tournament of the year and we hope the improvements we made the past two days are signs of thing to come."
Senior Elin Ohlsson maintained her amazingly consistent play, as she carded a final-round total of 75 finishing with a three-day total of 221 (74-72-75) tying her for third, just two strokes off of the winning pace set by Nebraska's Sarah Sasse. Sophomore Mindy Bullard, who competed in the tournament unattached, finished the tournament tied for 10th with a three-round total of 230 (74-78-78).
Martinsville, Ind., native and freshman Stephanie Turner wrapped up an impressive first tournament finishing in a tie for 12th with a total of 231 (75-76-80). Freshman Kelli Strubinger also had a great first outing tying for 17th with a three-round tally of 233 (78-79-76) shooting her best round of the tourney today. Freshman Denise Knaebel wrapped up the Tiger scoring with a 49th place finish and two- day total of 244.
However, the round of the day belonged to sophomore Maria Ohlsson, who had been disqualified earlier in the tournament for failure to sign her scorecard after the first round yesterday. Ohlsson was on fire on Tuesday carding four straight birdies on holes six, seven, eight and nine and seven birdies on the round to shoot a tournament-low 68 on the day. The round was Ohlsson's first under 70 in her career during a tournament. Next up for the Tigers will be a trip to Mason Rudolph Golf Championship in Nashville, Tenn., next Monday and Tuesday.
