Columbus, Ohio - The Mizzou soccer team dominated the Bowling Green Falcons to bring its season record to 4-1-1. Sloshing through a soggy field following a downpour, both teams were hindered, but the Tigers managed to master both the pooling water and the Falcons to finish the match with a 1-0 victory.
After a severe weather delay disrupting game start by an hour, the Tigers and Falcons kicked off their second game of the Ohio State Invitational. It didn't take long for Missouri to assert its dominance in the game as the Tigers scored their first goal on their first shot of the match just 1:38 minutes into the period. Freshman Amber Swinehart, serving in the midfield as relief to an injured Suzy Probst, brought the ball from the half and sent a low pass to forward Adriene Davis just outside the box. Davis masterfully refocused the ball with a flick to sophomore Missy Peabody who took it into the BGSU net.
The slippery field reeked havoc on the match resulting in collisions and many lost ball possessions. Despite the turmoil, the Tigers remained in prime form skilfully controlling the match. The Mizzou defense kept the Falcons in check throughout the first 45 minutes allowing just one shot with just 46 seconds remaining in the period.
While neither team was able to score during the second half, Missouri was unwilling to relinquish its control over Bowling Green. The Tigers mechanically set up skilful plays, but were unable to capitalize in the net. BGSU reverted to a strategy of launching a long ball to the forward line looking for its offense to create the play up top. Missouri was ready for the challenge however and held the Falcons.
Bowling Green had a brief glimmer of hope when Carrie Richards broke thru the Mizzou defense to take a direct shot on the Missouri goal. Richards' efforts were thwarted however by Missouri goalkeeper Megan Duncan, who earned her second shutout of the season, made her third of three saves in the game.
The victory gave Missouri its second tournament title of the season. After claiming the Florida State Invitational championship last week, the Tigers came out as the only team in the Ohio State Invitational to round out the weekend with a pair of wins and no losses.
Missouri returns to Columbia looking to add another win to its 4-1-1 season tally on Fri., Sept. 20 when it hosts Mississippi State at 7:00 p.m., in Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
