Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri has extended the contract of Head Football Coach Gary Pinkel, as announced today by Director of Athletics Mike Alden. The agreement extends his original five-year deal through the 2007 season.
With a career record of 77-44-3, Pinkel ranks 19th among active Division I coaches with his career winning percentage of .636. He came to Missouri in November of 2000, after a successful 10-year run as head coach at the University of Toledo. In less than two years at MU, Pinkel and his staff have been successful in making inroads in both regional and national recruiting, as evidenced by a 2002 class that ranked among the nation's top-30, according to recruiting analysts.
Pinkel's original contract at MU, signed in December of 2000, took him through the 2005 season. All other details of his contract, including his base salary of $192,000, will remain the same with the new extension.
"Obviously, I'm pleased to have the support of Mike Alden and Chancellor Wallace," said Pinkel. "We're working very hard to build a first-class program at Missouri, and this type of support can be instrumental in helping us achieve our goals," he said.
"Gary has shown from day one that he has a detailed plan to turn our football program around," said Alden. "He's a man of vision and of integrity, and those of us who are fortunate enough to work around him know that he will get the job done. This is a way to show that he has everyone's full support to do just that," he said.
