COLUMBIA, Mo. - Cindy Stein, head coach of the University of Missouri women's basketball team, will be inducted into the Greater Peoria (Ill.) Sports Hall of Fame on March 10. Stein is one of six inductees this year.
While Stein has been successful in the coaching ranks, her induction is a result of her athletic accomplishments both at Richwoods High School and Illinois Central College. Stein received 12 letters - four each in basketball, softball and volleyball - at Richwoods before attending ICC where she was named an All-American in basketball (twice) and softball (once).
Stein finished her collegiate career at Illinois where she ranks among the career leaders in assists and steals. She led the 1981-82 and 1982-83 Illini in assists.
Now in her fourth season as the Missouri head coach, Stein has guided the Tigers' recent turnaround. Since her arrival, Missouri has qualified for two postseason berths and posted an overall record of 67-51. Missouri went 22-10 in 2000-2001 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
