COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior forwards Evan Unrau (Fort Collins, Colo. / Rocky Mountain HS) and Terianne Wolford (Nixa, Mo. / Nixa HS) and senior guard Kerensa Barr (West Plains, Mo. / West Plains HS) each had a team-high 11 points Thursday night at the Missouri women's basketball team's annual "Tiger Night of Terror", held at the Hearnes Center.
Head Coach Cindy Stein's squad was split into Black and White intrasquad sides for the evening, which included trick-or-treating and other Halloween festivities prior to the scrimmage. Two separate 20-minute periods were contested, with some players switching teams at the break.
"Overall, I saw a lot of good things, but we still have a long way to go," said Stein. "We need to put in a lot of effort, but if we continue to see the level of play that we did tonight every day, we'll get there. I thought we were very aggressive. Some areas - our transition defense and post defense - still need fine-tuning. But overall, I liked what I saw."
The White team won the first half, 29-18, by shooting 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from the field and by holding the Black to just 8-of-24 shooting (33.3 percent). White also held an impressive 19-9 edge on the boards, led by junior forward Stretch James' (Columbus, Ohio / Northland HS / Tyler [Texas] JC) four rebounds.
Unrau and sophomore center Megan Roney (Indepedence, Mo. / Truman HS), both playing for the White team in the first half, each led all scorers with 10 points in the opening stanza. Unrau made all four of her field-goal attempts, while Roney was 4-of-5 from the field. Both players sank both of her charity tosses in the half.
Wolford led the Black with seven points and two rebounds, while freshman center Cherice Mack (St. Charles, Mo. / St. Charles HS) added six points and a pair of rebounds.
In the second half, Barr and freshman guard LaToya Bond (Urbana, Ill. / Urbana HS) each had eight points for the Black, which forced 16 White turnovers and held the White to 26.3 percent shooting. The Black converted on those turnovers and cruised to an easy 29-13 win.
For the game, Roney finished with an impressive double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in 37 minutes of action. She also blocked two shots. Bond's 10 total points made her the only other player in double figures.
The Tigers have a little over one week of practice before opening the exhibition season with a Sunday, Nov. 10, contest against the Basketball Travelers. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Hearnes Center. For ticket information, call 1-800-CAT-PAWS (884-PAWS in Columbia).
