Swimming & Diving Looks to Extend Streak Against Kansas

Oct. 31, 2002

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The women's swimming and diving teams streak of 15 consecutive dual meet victories will be challenged by archrival Kansas when the Tigers play host to the Jayhawks tomorrow in the University Natatorium at 6:00 p.m. The Tigers are one of the hottest teams in the country and are standing tall with a #21 ranking, it's their highest ranking ever. However history is on the Jayhawks side. Kansas is 24-2 all-time in dual meets against the Tigers dating back to 1978.

After dominating the series for 22 years the Tigers beat the Jayhawks for the first time on November 4, 2000, 170-120 in Columbia. Last season the Tigers traveled to Lawrence and pulled off another victory 126-117. After winning the last two meetings, the Tigers will look to keep both their winning streak against Kansas and their 15 straight dual meet victories alive.

The Jayhawks are 1-0 this season with a victory over Southern Illinois University. They finished fourth at the Big 12 Relays in Lincoln, Neb. trailing the Tigers by eight points 68-60. They come into the dual meet well rested and for the first time as underdogs.

The Jayhawks are led by sophomore Amy Gruber. Gruber holds four individual top times for Kansas this season (50, 100 and 500 freestyle and the 100 butterfly). Last season against the Tigers she won both the 100 and 200 free events.

On Saturday, November 2, both the men's and women's teams will travel to Kirksville, Mo. to take on Division II opponent Truman State. The start time for the dual meet is 2:00 at the Pershing Natatorium on the Truman State campus.

The Truman women's team are the reigning two-time defending NCAA Division II Champions and return all but two individuals from last year's team. In their first meet of the year they traveled to Lincoln, Neb. and defeated Nebraska 152-101. The Bulldogs won 11 of 14 events at the meet and qualified five swimmers for the NCAA Division II Championships.

The Truman men's team finished ninth in last year's Division II Championships and will kick off their season against the Tiger men's team.

NOTES FROM THE DECK: At the Fall Illini Classic ( Oct. 26) the Tiger 200 medley relay team consisting of Sarah Lo, Tiffany Bohon, Liz Schoborg and Andrea Nigh set a new IMPE pool record with their time of 1:46.60.
