COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior F Chinyere "Stretch" James (Columbus, Ohio / Northland HS / Tyler [Texas] JC) led all players with 21 points in the second annual "Brewer Breakfast" Saturday morning at Brewer Fieldhouse. The event served as the public's first look at the 2002-03 Tigers.
A series of 4-minute-long periods were contested between various members of the Tiger squad, with the coaches rotating team members among the two squads.
James was 10-of-16 from the field. Among the other top scorers were junior F Terianne Wolford (Nixa, Mo. / Nixa HS) and junior G Tracy Lozier (Leawood, Kan. / Blue Valley North HS), who each had 17 points. Lozier added five assists and four rebounds, while Wolford had six rebounds.
"Stretch finds a way to score. She's nowhere near the shape we want her to be in, yet she's still being productive, so it's going to be exciting when she puts it all together," said Head Coach Cindy Stein. "I saw a lot of good things out of everybody. I liked how Terianne shot the ball; she's been coming on strong this year. LaToya Bond is doing some really exciting things, and MyEsha Perkins is getting better and better. Plus, you've got Melanie Fisher who's solid all the time, and Evan Unrau who's solid all the time. I saw pretty good things out of everybody. I want our toughness to get better, and I want our defensive positioning a lot better, but I'm pleased because we put in a new offense and they all caught on to it pretty quickly."
Senior G Kerensa Barr (West Plains, Mo. / West Plains HS) nearly had a double-double, scoring 10 points and adding eight assists.
" We're a lot deeper than we were last year, and we're a lot farther along than we were last year," said Barr. "We started out pretty sharp, and maybe got a little sloppy at the end, but for the most part I think it went well. Toward the end, Stretch was playing so well that we could just throw it into the post to her. Tracy Lozier played really well, and our posts did a good job running the floor, and we were running up and down the floor a lot more than last year. We had a pretty good turnout; it was good for the fans to get a look at us this weekend."
Sophomore C Megan Roney (Independence, Mo. / Truman HS) was effective in the low post, hitting all four of her field-goal attempts. In addition, she drew several fouls and was 8-of-9 from the free-throw line for 16 points.
"Everybody did a really good job; I'm not surprised," said James. "Everything's going really smooth; we just need to work on some things and get better. I'm trying to work on getting up and down the floor."
The Tigers open the exhibition season on Sunday, Nov. 10, against the Basketball Travelers, with the home opener set for Tuesday, Nov. 26, against Bradley.
