LINCOLN, Neb -
The Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams each finished in third place at the Big 12 Relay Meet at the Devaney Sports Center Pool in Lincoln, Nebraska. The women's team finished 3 points behind Texas A&M 71-68, for second place. The University of Texas finished in first with 120 points followed by A&M and Mizzou. Kansas (60 points), Iowa State (51 points) and host Nebraska (25 points) followed the Tigers. The men's team finished 10 points behind Texas A&M (91-81) to finish third, Texas placed first with 116 points.
The team of Sarah Lo, Mariona Costa and Tiffany Bohon finished first in the 150 breaststroke relay with a time of 1:31.22. The Tigers finished second in five different relay events (200 free, 300 back, 300 fly, 200 medley and the 3-Meter dive) and third in three events (150 back, 150 fly and 300 breast).
"I thought we swam very well, especially in the breaststroke and backstroke events," said head coach Brian Hoffer. "I'm not suprised by all means, I knew we would swim very good and it showed in the results."
The diving team led the way for the men's team. The freshmen duo of Aaron Wionzek and Zac Metcalf finished first with a score of 276.95 in the 3-Meter dive. Senior Jamie Sweeney and freshman Evan Watters finished with a score of 284.90, however their dives were exhibition. In the pool, the team of Matt North, Tyler Belanger, Radu Miclaus and Matt Ferrarelli finished second in the 400 medley relay. Ferrarelli added another second place showing in the 300 backstroke relay, teaming up with Chris Lukas and Dustin McKnight. The men added three third place finishes in the 200 free, 1500 free and the 100 medley relay.
"Our diving team came up big, I knew they would be the strength of this team. But for the three freshman to come in and contribute this quick, I'm looking forward to the rest of the season," said Hoffer.
Both teams will return to action tomorrow at the Devaney Sports Center Pool. The men will have a dual meet against 2002 NCAA Champions Texas A&M and the women will compete in a tri-meet against Nebraska and Texas A&M. The start time for the meets is 9:00 a.m.
