COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams took care of business on Saturday with victories over Drury College in Springfield, Mo. The Mizzou women's squad improved to 7-0 on the season while men upped their record to 3-2 in dual meet competition. The women defeated Drury by a score of 156-72. The men pulled away with a 136-105 win.
The men's squad were led by their big guns, juniors Radu Miclaus, Matt Ferrarelli, and diver Jamie Sweeney. Miclaus won the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly events. Ferrarelli was a double-winner in the 400 individual medley and 100 freestyle.
The most improbable effort of the day came from Sweeney on the diving boards. Sweeney, who came in less than 100 percent because of the flu, won both the one-meter and three-meter boards. His victory on the one-meter board was by 40 points.
"What Jamie (Sweeney) did today was remarkable," said Hoffer. "He is a talented diver, but to do what he did today in the physical condition that he was in shows how tough of a kid Jamie is."
Hoffer was also pleased to see freshman Justin Zeimetz record his second victory in two days in the 50 freestyle.
"The guys really bounced back well today," said Hoffer. "Yesterday was a tough loss, and I thought we swam really hard today."
The Tigers undefeated women's team got off to a quick start with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 medley relay, but Drury hung with the Tigers after a victory in the 1000 freestyle and then a 1-2-3 sweep of their own in the 50 freestyle. But the Tigers recovered and went on to win the remaining events and cruised to the victory.
Five freshmen paced the Tigers on Saturday. Amanda Merit and Anna Massey recorded big victories for Missouri on the diving boards. Merit won the one-meter board while Massey was victorious on the three-meter board. Megan Morford recorded the victory in the 400 individual medley. Becca Dawson won the 200 butterfly and Mariona Costa continued to impress with yet another win in the 200 breaststroke.
"The women did what they had to do today," said Hoffer. "Now we have to get ready for Iowa State next week."
