COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Good things were happening again for the men's and women's track & field teams Friday night in the Hearnes Fieldhouse. While snow was falling in Columbia, things stayed hot indoors.
Junior Christian Cantwell won both the weight throw and shot put events. His mark in the shot put was an automatic qualifying mark (65-9.75) and had a provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw. Senior Micah Shanks and junior Russ Bell also provisionally qualified in the weight throw.
The Tiger sophomores were super in the women's throws. Sophomore Holly Scherder had a 51-1.25 toss in the weight throw to win the event while sophomore Janae Strickland won the shot put (44-5.25).
Sophomore Lyndsey Tait now holds the Missouri indoor record in the women's pole vault with her personal best height of 11-7.75 from the Invitational. Buster McLain of Southwest Texas State won the men's pole vault with a provisional qualifying height of 17-4.5.
Unattached hurdler Rachel Joy set the Hearnes Fieldhouse record in the women's 60 meter hurdles after winning the event in a time of 8.57. The previous record of 8.62 was set just one week ago by Natasha Foreman of Wichita State.
Other event winners for Missouri were junior Timothy Dunne in the men's mile (4:14.82), senior Becky Froelker in the women's 1000m (2:56.38) and junior Fiona Asigbee in the women's pentathlon. Unattached high jumper Jay Meystedt, who only has one outdoor season of eligiblity left, won the event with a jump of 6-11.
Next up for the men's and women's track & field teams is the KU-KSU-MU Triangular Feb. 26 in Manhattan, Kan. The Tigers have not won the event, which is scored as one team total (men and women), since 1998.
