Missouri Women's Swimming Sends Four to Summer National Championships

Aug. 9, 2002

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. - The Missouri women's swimming team will send four swimmers to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the Phillips 66 Summer National Championships (Aug. 12-17). Senior Tiffany Bohon, juniors Rebecca Wolfe and Andrea Nigh, and sophomore Becca Dawson were selected to compete at this prestigious event based on their times in their respected events during the 2001-02 swimming season.

Wolfe and Dawson are members of the Mizzou Swimming Club, who train and compete in Columbia during the summer. They will be coached by Mizzou swimming and diving head coach Brian Hoffer, who also serves as the head coach of the Mizzou Swim Club. Bohon and Nigh are competing in the championships with different summer club teams.

"This is the most swimmers we had compete at Nationals from our program," said Coach Hoffer. "This shows that our program is on the rise, especially after a very strong 2001-2002 season. We are developing swimmers that are good enough to compete nationally."

Wolfe, the school record holder in the 200 butterfly (2:00.66), and Dawson, third on the all-time list in the 200 butterfly (2:02.40), will both compete in the 200 butterfly at the Championships. Big 12 All-Conference swimmer Bohon will compete in the 100 and 200 breast. Nigh, the school record holder in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, will compete in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.

"I really like our chances at the Championships. The girls have been training and competing very hard this summer and I think it will show at the meet," said Hoffer.

USA Swimming uses the Summer Nationals for selecting its teams for the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships, the 2003 World Championships, the 2003 Duel in the Pool, the Pan American Games and the World University Games. The Summer Nationals is considered the top USA swimming competition and a preview of the possible 2004 USA Olympic team. The 1998 Summer Nationals included 42 of the 48 eventual 2000 U.S. Olympic swimmers who competed at Sydney.
