Some people in town have actually wondered "if they'll ever get to use the courts" since this is where the MU Women's Tennis Team plays.
Well, the answer is a resounding YES!!
Although, the Green Tennis Center was actually BUILT specifically because the MU Women's Team didn't have an adequate home. So without the women's team, the town of Columbia would not have received this beautiful brand new tennis center! So we should thank them!
But to answer the question, the team really only uses the building for a tiny fraction of the year. Take any given day in the summer. During the summer (May-August), Coach Starkey's players are all gone, so the building is wide open for you to use. In the fall (August-October), the team is probably going to be outdoors playing, so again, the building is wide open for members to use.
So, you may now be wondering, when is the team actually in there? Well, the team gets back after the holiday break, and they practice (and play their matches) in there from about late January until the weather gets nice (mid-March). They practice Monday-Friday (when they are in town) from 2:30 PM until about 5:30 PM. Considering the Green Tennis Center OPENS at 8:00AM and CLOSES at 10:00PM daily, the team only uses their own courts for a little over two hours each day! So even when the team is using the Green Tennis Center, there are ELEVEN HOURS EACH DAY where the place is WIDE OPEN for member usage!
Have you ever SEEN the MU Team play? Well, all of their practices are open to the public, and we encourage people to come by and watch the team practice! These girls come to Columbia from as close as Kansas City and as far away as Slovenia and the Czech Republic! And these girls are really, really GOOD! The set-up is very intimate, and you are right on top of the action. This is as close to professional tennis as you are going to see in this town! Big 12 Conference Tennis is absolutely amazing! Mizzou's top doubles team was ranked No. 15 in the country last year, and was the best team in the central part of the U.S.! And Coach Starkey has new players coming in every year from all over the place, so the teams are just getting better and better. It's a blast to watch them play!
Having the MU Team AT the Green Tennis Center is actually the biggest PLUS to joining the center. When you join the Green Tennis Center, you get access to the MU Team, and you play at the same top-notch club they play at! The Green Tennis Center is the home of the Tigers!
