Cantwell Named Big 12 Male Athlete of the Week

April 26, 2002

DALLAS - Junior thrower Christian Cantwell was once again selected as the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the week, for the week of April 15-21. Colorado distance runner Jodie Hughes was selected as the week's Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week.

Cantwell earned the conference honor after throwing 70-1.5 in the shot put to defeat some of the world's elite performers last Saturday at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan. The Eldon, Mo., native defeated Kevin Toth, who currently owns the second-best mark in the world, and Olympian Andy Bloom. Cantwell now is ranked third in the world with his mark at the KU Relays and also was named the Relays' most outstanding men's performer for his effort. He broke his own record as well as the KU Relays' with the NCAA automatic-qualifying toss.
