DALLAS - Missouri senior first baseman Mick Weiss of St. Peters, Mo., and Oklahoma freshman pitcher David Purcey of Dallas, Texas, have been chosen as Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting by a select panel of media covering Big 12 baseball for games played from April 15-21.
Weiss smashed eight hits in 10 official trips to the plate to pace the Tigers to a doubleheader sweep with six RBI against Kansas at Lawrence, Kan., last Sunday to cap a 10-for-19 (.526) week. He also led the Tigers on a four-game scoring binge with 10-plus runs against SMS, Saint Louis and Kansas for the week. Weiss drove in 10 total runs, scored six more, batted .800 in the Sunday twinbill, and scored five of his six runs against the Jayhawks. The first baseman from the suburban St. Louis area had a 1.105 slugging percentage and made just one error in 29 chances in the field.
Purcey made his first two college pitching starts memorable with wins over TCU and Oral Roberts, which have been ranked among national leaders in hitting. He struck out 13 hitters in 13 innings pitched during the pair of starts while walking four and allowing just four earned runs. Purcey got solid support at the plate (13 runs from teammates) and in the field as he notched a 2.18 ERA and raised his overall record to 3-2 with 51 strikeouts in 45 1/3 innings pitched.
Missouri's Lee Laskowski was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Player of the Week last week.
The Tigers, 19-19 overall, will next play Saint Louis Tuesday at 7 p.m. at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Mo.
