MANHATTAN, Kan. - The real story for the Missouri Track & Field teams Friday at the KSU-KU-MU Triangular was not the team scores when the day was done. In the end, the collection of individual performances was what mattered.
"I wouldn't trade our performances today so that we could win the meet," head track & field coach Rick McGuire said.
The Tigers started the day with junior Christian Cantwell's automatically qualifying mark in the weight throw with his toss of 72-3.75 -- his personal best in the event. Junior Russ Bell provisionally qualified in the same event, with his personal best throw of 69-0.5. Cantwell, Bell and senior Micah Shanks currently rank third, fourth and sixth in the nation, respectively, in the weight throw.
Cantwell also took first place in the shot put at the triangular. Cantwell's throw of 66-10.75 bettered his own personal best by five inches. It also set Kansas State's Ahern Field House record and the KSU-KU-MU meet record. Bell's personal best toss (61-1.5) was good for second place.
Sophomore Christi Myers won the women's high jump, clearing a height of 5-8.5. Abbe Ohneck had her best jump of the season (5-6.5) to place third for the Tigers. Freshman Jesse Sims took the men's high jump title with his personal best jump of 7-1. Jason Edmonds was runner-up for the Tigers with a mark of 6-11, a career best for the sophomore.
Sophomore Jennifer Bennett placed first in the pole vault with a personal-best height of 11-5.75. Missouri's indoor best height in the women's pole vault is 11-6, held by sophomore Lyndsey Tait.
Timothy Dunne won the 1000m for the men, and Amanda Bales won the women's 800m. Becky Froelker took second in the women's 1000m, her time was the second-best time in the Big 12 this season and just 0.7 seconds behind Kansas State's eight-time All-American Amy Mortimer's finish. Junior Amy Chipman also took a first-place finish for the women, winning the 3000m run in 10:07.15.
Senior Ben Dean was second in the long jump and placed fourth in the triple jump for the men. His mark in the triple jump (48-6) was his best mark as a Tiger.
Kansas State won the meet for the third year in a row with 277 points. Kansas was second with 223 and Missouri was right behind with 218.
Up next for the Tigers is the Meyo Invitational next Friday and Saturday, hosted by the University of Notre Dame.
