Columbia, Mo.-The University of Missouri women's soccer team picked up its third win of the season and its second shutout over Indiana State with a 4-0 victory. The Sycamore offense was non-existent in the game, not making one offensive play during the entire 90-minute game. The challenge proved extensive for Missouri as it paired seven offensive players to an ISU defensive force of 11.
Despite the odds, the Tigers dominated the game from the start taking 18 shots during the first half while preventing a single shot by the Sycamores. Mizzou forced ISU goalkeeper, Carey Patton, a member of the 2000 Missouri team, to make six saves in the first 45 minutes, while also giving up two goals.
Freshman Melissa Peabody proved to be Mizzou's offensive force scoring two goals in the first half. The forward scored her first goal on a flick from Adriene Davis. The ball was sent through the defensive line where Peabody's speed allowed her to capitalize. She scored her second goal just eight minutes later on a cross by defender Carrie Crosset. The 5-9 Peabody ducked down for a low header in the right bottom corner of the net.
Mizzou didn't let up in the second half as they added 16 more shots to the tally to end the game outshooting Indiana State 34-0. Midfielders Karen Bauer and Tamara Kochen each added a goal in the half to round out the game with a 4-0 victory.
Bauer scored on a free kick that was crossed in by defender Kristin Gibbons and Kochen capitalized on a deflected ball inside the box. It is the first season and career goal for both athletes.
Stephanie Krawczyk picks up her second win of the season and her first shutout in 2001.
Coach Blitz on the Game
On a team getting no shots...
"That is a first for my career. I think coaches have to do what is right for their program. It is not something I agree or disagree with. I understand his point, he was trying to make them slow the game down, he certainly thought in the second half to make it a one half game, which is smart, but it turned out to be a rare surprise by the tactics. It was certainly a good learning experience for us, it was frustrating, but a good experience to learn how to deal with those tactics."
On MU's performance....
"It certainly wasn't a close game, but I thought we still need to make sure that we don't play down to the other team's level. As a young team that is important for us. I think in the second half we picked up a little bit, but I think that is something that we will continue to work through."
On Melissa Peabody....
"Anytime a freshman can get confidence scoring goals, that is a plus for us."
