Columbia, Mo.-The University of Missouri women's soccer team picked up its second win of the season with a 1-0 victory over North Texas today. The win is MU's first shutout of the season and brings the Tigers to a 2-0 record.
Persistence was key for Mizzou, as it outshot North Texas 24-to-4 in the game. The Tigers pummeled the Lady Eagles with 15 shots on goal, while MU goalkeeper Megan Duncan was only forced to make one save during the game.
Missouri proved that its defense is capable of promoting a strong offense. The Tigers forced 13 corner kicks in the game, where they finally capitalized. Sophomore Adriene Davis scored MU's only goal in the match on the team's final corner kick of the game. Defender Kristin Gibbons sailed in the cross that was deflected by a North Texas defender. Davis collected the loose ball for the strike. Overall, the forward took 11 shots, including six shots on goal to score her first goal of the season.
Missouri returns to action on Tues., Sept. 4 when they host Indiana State at Audrey J. Walton Soccer Complex at 7:00 p.m.
Coach Blitz
On leadership...
"I think all of our seniors, although they aren't all playing, do a lot behind the scenes. Mandy Waters, Dyana Russell, Suzy Probst and Steph Brennan all make a huge impact."
On team chemistry...
"With freshmen, one day they are a genius and the next day they just aren't. But, we are extremely pleased that they give the effort needed the whole way through. Youth is always frustrating in that aspect because it is a time issue. There is only so much you can do as you're helping them come into their own."
On the new coaching staff...
"The new element our coaching staff has brought to the program is very exciting. Manoj Khettry, Mikki Denney and Kate Cortis are outstanding. They've made me a better coach and they've made our team a better team."
