Columbia, Mo.-The University of Missouri women's soccer team resumed the 2001 season after canceling one game against Eastern Illinois and postponing competitions against Drury and Western Illinois. The Tigers picked up their game against Panthers tonight taking their fifth straight win of the season with a 6-1victory-to extend MU's longest home-win streak in program history.
Missouri put itself on the board just four minutes into the game with a goal by sophomore Melissa McLellan. Defender Dyana Russell sent in a corner kick that sailed out of the box. Forward Adriene Davis redirected the cross, allowing McLellan to score. Just six minutes later Davis returned to score an unassisted goal. She collected a goal kick at center field and dribbled through the Panther defense for the score.
Despite Mizzou controlling the game taking 15 shots, Drury remained surefooted through the first half. The Panthers took seven shots-five on goal-- in the first 45 minutes. With just five minutes left in the period, Drury forward Jody Palazzolo lobbed a shot to Carrie Wright. Wright slammed a shot into the top center of the MU goal to put Drury on the board.
After leading by two, Missouri was unwilling to leave the half with a one point lead. With just over a minute and a half, Davis flicked a pass through the Panther goal box where freshman Shea Swoboda capitalized to send MU into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Melissa Peabody teamed up with Davis to ignite fire in the second half. Peabody scored back-to-back goals in the period from assists by Davis. The Tigers rounded out the game with Davis' second goal of the game from an assist by Karen Bauer.
Overall, Missouri outshot Drury 26-to-11, including a 15-to-6 shot on goal differential. Goalkeeper Megan Duncan played all 90 minutes for the Tigers making five saves and allowing one goal.
Davis set two Missouri single-game records scoring eight points and dishing out four assists.
The Tigers travel to Durham, N.C., to play Duke and North Carolina this weekend. The Tigers face the Blue Devils on Fri., Sept. 21. MU plays UNC on Sun., Sept. 23.
