OZARK, Mo. -- In the second meeting between the University of Missouri and Southwest Missouri State baseball teams, it was Southwest Missouri State which rallied in the eighth inning to pick up a win. The Bears used a four-run eighth inning to pick up a 5-3 victory Tuesday at Price Cutter Park.
In the first meeting between the two teams, Missouri used two runs in the eighth inning to tie the game before winning 12-11 in 11 innings.
Garrett Bauer (Fr., Wildwood, Mo.) struck out nine batters in three innings of work while making his first collegiate start on the mound. Bauer's nine strikeouts are a career-high and marks the fourth time this season a starting pitcher for the Tigers has recorded nine strikeouts. As a staff, Missouri struck out a season-high 18 batters.
Ryan Stegall extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a first-inning triple.
After Southwest Missouri State took a 1-0 lead, the Tigers scored a run in the fourth inning to tie the game. Jon Williams walked and eventually scored on a single by Cody Ehlers.
Williams again was involved in the sixth inning as MU took a 2-1 lead. Stegall reached on a one-out walk and scored when Williams doubled into left field.
Missouri took a 3-1 lead after batting in the eighth inning. However, Southwest Missouri State answered with four runs in its half of the frame. Three runs came on homers -- a two-run homer by Ben Margalski and a solo shot by Ryan Howard.
Shaun Marcum fell to 3-3 with the loss. The Tigers are now 30-22-1 while the Bears improve to 35-16.
The Tigers return to Big 12 Conference action with a three-game series starting 7 p.m. Thursday against Texas A&M. All three games will be at MU's Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field.
