COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Missouri baseball team jumped out to an 8-3 lead and needed an outstanding defensive play to hang on for an 8-5 win over Southeast Missouri Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field Tuesday night in non-conference action.
After Southeast Missouri scored two runs in the top half of the first inning, the Tigers scored a run in their half of the first. Jayce Tingler reached on a bunt single and scored on a single by Lee Laskowski.
MU scored two runs in the second inning to the score at three. One run, scored by Ryan Stegall, came via a balk before Wes Fewell scored on an infield out.
In the fourth, Missouri plated five runs - four coming on a home run by Mick Weiss. The homer was Weiss' fifth of the season. Fewell and Brian Desch led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Luke Cassis reached on an error and Tingler walked. With two outs, Laskowski walked to bring up Weiss. Weiss hit a 2-1 pitch over the right-center field wall for the grand slam and the 8-3 lead.
Southeast Missouri rallied in the eighth inning, scoring two runs and loading the bases with two out. Clemente Bonilla, whose .435 batting average ranked among the nation's best, hit a fly ball to right field. The ball, which might have cleared the fence, was caught by Fewell. Fewell admitted after the game that he was not sure if he caught the ball over the fence or not.
Fewell led Missouri with three hits while Stegall added two hits.
Shaun Marcum picked up the pitching victory (3-1) while Stegall recorded his fifth save of the season. Stegall now has 17 career saves.
Tingler stole his 14th base of the season and now ranks tied for 10th all-time at Missouri with 28 stolen bases. He is tied with Steve Ball (1992-94) and Chris Wyrick (1990-93). Missouri improves to 22-16-1 while Southeast Missouri falls to 25-14.
The Tigers will play Creighton Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Taylor Stadium.
